“2021” New Year’s Eve Numerals Arrive in Times Square

“2021” New Year’s Eve Numerals Arrive in Times Square

“2021” has finally arrived, at least in the form of giant light-up numerals. The seven-foot digits arrived in Times Square after a cross-country road trip that started in California. For the next couple days, you can get up close to the four numeral signs before they are transferred to the top of One Times Square for the New Year’s Eve ball drop.

People in Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey all got to see the “2021” numerals as they drove through on a cross-country road trip attached to an all-new 2021 Kia Sorento. While many people usually travel to New York City for New Year’s Eve festivities, no spectators will be allowed to watch the ball drop in Times Square this year due to COVID-19. You can bring the Times Square party into your home with a new virtual app, and stream the ball drop live. There won’t be any crowds, but there will be performances. Singer Gloria Gaynor will sing us out of 2020 with her hit “I Will Survive.”

It takes 526 9-watt energy-efficient LED bulbs to light up the giant “2,””0,” “2,” and “1”. The “0” uses the most bulbs, 164, while the “1” uses just 72. Put together, the four digits weigh 1,080 pounds total. Again, the “1” comes in as the lightest, just 200 pounds, while the “0” is the heaviest at 380 pounds.

The numerals will be at street level on Times Square Plaza between 46th and 47th Streets through noon on December 23rd. Visitors are welcome to take photos with the numbers in a safe, socially distanced way. When you visit, you can also write a wish for the wishing wall on a piece of confetti. The confetti will be dropped at midnight on New Year’s Eve! After the 23rd, the numbers will be placed atop One Times Square, beneath the New Year’s Eve ball, waiting to light up for the beginning of 2021. Can’t wait!
