booking.com becomes the No. 1 hotel guest review site, with real reviews from real guests

The recent publication by booking” class=”spip_in”>booking.com accommodation acclaimed by users of booking” class=”spip_in”>booking.com allowed to make a simple calculation: booking” class=”spip_in”>booking.com generated an average of one hundred thousand reviews per day (104,699 precisely) in 2014.

booking, only 42 million reviews. Yes but in only 14 months !

In this little game booking” class=”spip_in”>booking.com publishes 42 million reviews less than 14 months old. 42.970 million reviews on 595,238 establishments, that’s:

an average of 38 million reviews per year

on average 104,699 reviews per day

an average of 72 reviews per establishment in just 14 months, or 5.15 reviews per month.

The 5 countries where the most comments came from in 2014 on booking” class=”spip_in”>booking.com are the United Kingdom (3,925,802), Germany (3,569,200), France (3,478,905), Italy (3,119,369) and the United States (2,705,377).

TripAdvisor, 190 million contributions. Yes but in 15 years !

Opposite, we are harped on in our ears with a certain TripAdvisor which collected 190 million contributions (opinions, photos, videos, messages on its forums) during the period 2000-2015, on 4.4 million hotels/places/restaurants/activities/attractions/etc… 190 million in 15 years is:

on average 12,666,667 contributions per year

on average 34,703 contributions per day

on average 43 contributions per “ establishment » in 15 years, i.e. 0.24 contribution per month

TripAdvisor is expected to generate 225 million contributions per year. Oh well no !

Given the fact that TripAdvisor collects contributions from 4.4 million companies, i.e. approximately 7 times more establishments than booking” class=”spip_in”>booking.comto be first, TripAdvisor should therefore collect 700,000 contributions per day, or 21 million per month or 255 million per year.. We are far, very far !

What does the AFNOR standard say? ?

According to the recent AFNOR standard, the expiration of notices is 24 months. booking” class=”spip_in”>booking.com which removes reviews older than 14 months also fulfills the other criteria of the standard since hoteliers can respond to reviews. booking” class=”spip_in”>booking.com has also always been tough on reviews mentioning defamatory names or statements. What’s waiting booking” class=”spip_in”>booking.com to add the badge “ AFNOR certified » on its French website ? Mystery…

imagine if TripAdvisor was at the level of the AFNOR standard: it would be necessary to delete tens of millions of contributions and show de facto that TripAdvisor is no longer 1 at aller review site.

And the fraud ?

On booking” class=”spip_in”>booking.com100 % of reviews are verified: they follow a reservation and the invoicing of a commission. Certainly a hotelier can cheat, but at the rate of 17 % of commission on the pseudo stay, the bill can very quickly be very salty. It’s hard to believe that fraud could amount to more than 3 or 4 % of total. At the beginning of the collaboration yes it is easy. After several tens or hundreds of reviews, it is several tens or several hundred false reviews that would have to be generated to raise the rating even by one point. At an average price of €80, a one-night booking generates €13.6 in commission. 100 fake reviews therefore cost €1,360. At an average price of €150, 100 fake reviews cost €2,550. Knowing that each hotel has its own account manager, there too it would be necessary to take the teams of booking” class=”spip_in”>booking.com for plums not to realize that a hotel miraculously increases its rating by one point.

On TripAdvisorimpossible to know the level of fraud, whether it comes from an establishment to improve its own referencing, whether it comes from a competitor who wishes to “ to flow » its competitors, whether it comes from a former employee who wishes to harm his ex-employer… The problem is that the slightest attempt to distribute a false opinion, ie an opinion that does not not following a real stay, is accepted by TripAdvisor as long as we show a little common sense (cf. our article of March 15, 2013). When we know the Parisian market, we can only be surprised to have seen or to see regularly dozens of establishments gaining several hundred places in the ranking TripAdvisor in just a few months, especially when without spending a penny on the product side.

The winners of booking at 10/10

The only two French establishments to have obtained a score of 10/10 on booking” class=”spip_in”>booking.com are :

Gite La Grange d’Angèle, Le Bourg, 71460 Champagny sous Uxelles: a gite that cannot be found directly

Arles Hideaway – Le Duplex des Arènes, 2 Rue Diderot, 13200 Arles: an apartment not found live on the Internet

These 2 fabulous ratings were achieved with a low number of reviews (10 for the first, 23 for the second), much less than the average of 72 above. Seeing that customers give such exceptional ratings to non-hotel accommodation should make hoteliers ask themselves questions, the questions that would allow them to become the darlings of customers again…

Conclusion

Now that the proof is made that TripAdvisor is no longer first, to continue to peddle with candor the good word of TripAdvisor as well as his studies similar to the famous Lotto advertisement whose slogan was “ 100 % of winners tried their luck » is now a pathological inability to operate 2 neurons simultaneously. It is on that it is less tiring to reproduce than to reflect !

Yes opinions are important. Yes TripAdvisor distributes a lot of notices, unfortunately too many of which have passed their expiry date. Yes booking” class=”spip_in”>booking.com became #1 in hotel reviews.

But you, hoteliers, what are you waiting for to take back control of your business by starting by recovering what belongs to you by right, the opinions of your own customers ?
