Hampshire weather: Jubilee weekend at risk as rain moves to ‘all areas’ next week

With the hotly anticipated Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend right around the corner, Brits may need a brace for some less than desirable weather conditions. Current Met Office forecasts predict that there is a possibility for sunshine if high pressure is dominant to the west of the country, coming in from the Atlantic, though it is still too early to be sure what will happen.

Should a low pressure over the Azores come closer, showers would then be expected across the whole country, with Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern calling it a “loose cannon”.

Next week, the UK will enjoy a four day bank holiday weekend, beginning on June 2, in celebration of The Queen’s 70 years on the Throne. Plenty of exciting events and celebrations are planned across the whole country and you can find our full list of all the amazing Hampshire Jubilee plans here .

Mr McGivern continued on to explain that cold and windier weather is expected to move in from Sunday, and from here the remainder of the week will be quite unsettled and unpredictable. He said: “The trend towards more unsettled weather continues later on Sunday as low pressure over Scandinavia begins to drift its way westwards appearing into the North Sea, containing a lot of cloud, some rain as well which may well affect the North Sea coast, parts of eastern England, parts of eastern Scotland during Monday.

“Again the driest and brightest weather will be towards the west and that is closer to the high pressure. Sunny spells and feeling pleasant in the sunshine but always a chance of a shower in the west.

“More likely we will see showers in the east, along with that brisk wind it will feel on the cool side, temperatures declining day by day and overnight temperatures will decline as well so some chilly nights to come, Sunday night, Monday night, Tuesday night for example.”

Due to low pressure prevalent over the Azores and high pressure over Iceland, an unusual weather system is formed with a weaker jet stream and more random weather patterns. Mr McGivern described the low system as a “loose cannon, it’s going to mean about fairly randomly, that makes its behavior difficult to predict.”

Currently it is not known exactly how much rain the UK could see over the four days. He continues: “Some computer models are suggesting that low will drift our way from the south west for the end of next week to bring widespread showers and outbreaks of rain from the south west.

“Higher pressure towards the north west, lower pressure towards the east but other computer models suggest we keep the higher pressure to the west and lower pressure to the east.” Today (May 27) however, the weather in the southeast is expected to keep particularly warm and clear.

Southeast five day forecast

Today will begin with some low cloud that is expected to promptly clear, leaving a rather dry and bright day with temperature highs of 21C complete with plenty of long sunny spells. The day’s bright conditions will then give way to a dry night with lengthy clear spells, turning chilly in sheltered rural spots overnight with lows of 5C.

Saturday is then set to be another day of bright and clear weather, perhaps with a little more cloud than seen Friday, but still feeling pleasantly warm. Temperatures will keep mostly average throughout the day with maximum temperatures of 20C.

Then from Sunday conditions are set to turn rather unsettled, with outbreaks of rain and showers at times with a chance for heavy bursts on Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures will feel cooler than average, particularly along the coast.
