Chloe has lived in Milan for several years and her two children were born there. Nothing better than an expat to tell us about her adopted city, right? This week, we are going to talk about Milan with family, an easy-to-organize city-trip, not far from France. Here is, in detail, everything you can do in Milan with the children.

1- What are the essential things to do in Milan?

To get a general overview of Milan, here are some must-sees:

Milan Cathedral

Milan Cathedral is the largest church in Italy: the Duomo di Milano (Dome of Milan). With its 108 meters high, 160 meters long and 92 meters wide, it can easily accommodate 40,000 people.

Gothic-inspired, its interior is adorned with works of art and religious ornaments, and you can see remnants of light fixtures from centuries past. It also houses the largest organ in Italy, which has no less than 15,350 pipes. A visit not to be missed even if your children are not fans of churches! 😉

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Whether you are a fan of shopping or not, a visit to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is essential. Also nicknamed the “Milan Salon”, it is a shopping mall which was created in the nineteenth century. You will find famous shops but also restaurants and terraces.

The Teatro alla Scala

The Teatro alla Scala is one of the most famous opera theaters in world that’s why we put it in the must-do list in Milan! The theater has a museum housing a large collection of paintings, busts, costumes and various items related to the world of opera.

The Sforza Castle (Castello Sforzesco)

Sforza Castle was built as a fortress in the 14th century and is one of Milan’s most iconic landmarks. Today it houses some of the best museums in the city. Children in general love to visit castles!

The Ambrosian Pinacoteca

The Pinacoteca Ambrosiana is one of the best art galleries in Milan. It houses the sketches of Leonardo da Vinci. It was founded in 1618 by Borromeo, it is a complex including the Ambrosian Library and the Accademia del Disegno to serve as a place of study for young artists of the Contrarreforma.

2- Cool activities to do in Milan with children?

To please the whole family, it is interesting to vary between the essential visits and those intended for children. Chloe made us a list of kid-friendly activities!

The Bagni misteriosi swimming pool

The Bagni Misteriosi swimming pool is a cultural and aquatic center from the 1930s with 25 and 50 meter pools that can be transformed into ice rinks in winter. Ideal for cooling off in hot weather.

The parks and museums of Milan

The museums are small and some are linked to school curricula. You will also find exhibits that are often suitable for children.

Here is a list of museums your children will love:

  • The Natural History Museum (Museo Civico di Storia Naturale): located in the Indro Montanelli Public Park, you will find a beautiful exhibition and in particular a reconstituted tyrannosaurus!

Milan with the Family: Tram Ride

Trams have existed in Milan since 1876. Even today, some historic trams over 80 years old circulate in the Italian city. Milan has 18 tram lines that run through the city until after midnight ; it is the means of transport with the most extensive timetables. The trams are numbered from 1 to 33.

3- Activities, outings, spots less known to tourists to do in Milan?

The Call of the Wild

The Milanese do not stay much in their city on weekends, they rather take the opportunity to go to the lakes, sea or mountains less than two hours from Milan.

If you have time, during your stay, we recommend that you also take a short excursion to the lakes. If you don’t want to rent a car, you can opt for an excursion from Milan: Go to Lake Como or to Lake Garda.

Lesser known activities to do in Milan with the family:

4- A few kids-friendly addresses to share with us for a family weekend in Milan?

In general in Milan and I would say everywhere, Italy is kids-friendly, they love babies! This is a trip suitable for any age!

Any restaurant or pizzeria is kid-friendly! Places that are a bit fashionable and expensive in the evening are probably less suitable.

Here are some addresses recommended by Chloé:

Milano is very nice in spring and autumn. It is extremely hot in July-August. Moreover, in August a lot of things are closed!
