The city of Cancún, Mexico, is a destination that has everything for a great family vacation. What attracts travelers the most are its fine white sand beaches, bathed in turquoise-colored waters and through which you can see pretty goldfish. And that’s not all, there are many more reasons why Cancun is charming. For those thinking of visiting this fabulous city, here are 10 things you need to know if planning to do so with children.
1. The flight is long, be patient, but it’s worth it
You may be discouraged when you learn that Cancún is located 10 hour flight, at least, from Spain, not to mention if you have to stop over. If long-haul flights are already boring for adults, they are even more so for children. Above all, you will need to be patient. Try traveling at night so that children sleep as long as possible and take toys or gadgets with you to distract them as much as possible. As for the effects of jet lag, don’t worry about the children, they can handle it better than you.
2. Where to stay with the family
Cancún’s hotel offer is impressive. Before deciding on accommodation, think about the purpose of the trip. It is best to rent near a quiet beach and have a good program of children’s activities. In my case, I don’t like “all-inclusive resorts” because of the kind of tourism they encourage. There are good hotels that also think about children and which are not massified, such as theInterContinental Presidente Cancun Resortwhere we stayed and which directly overlooks one of the best beaches in Cancun.
3. Crazy traffic
Traffic is one of the worst things about Cancun. There are cars and traffic jams at all hours. If you plan to travel by car, avoid rush hour if you don’t want to spend many people in the vehicle or see the children get impatient. Be careful crossing the avenues, you will have to be extra careful.
4. We will spend a few pesos
One of the favorite pastimes of tourists and residents of Cancún is shopping. The city is full of shopping malls. Some of them are oversized, like The Island. There are also art markets such as the Mercado Coral Negro. Sure you will find a very funny t-shirt or images that will please children. We are very fond of wooden puzzles with which children can make very fun typical Mexican figures. These are pesos well spent.

5. Watch out for mosquitoes
If you are staying near the Nichupté lagoonthere will be mosquitoes, it’s almost sure. There is no risk of malaria or tropical diseases, but the bites of these insects can cause great discomfort to children. Put mosquito repellent bracelets on them and the problem is solved. As a remedy, you can also give them small doses of tonic water a few days before the trip.
6. Sunbathe in moderation
Once you’re in Cancun, the kids aren’t going to want to get out of the water, whether it’s at the beach or in the hotel pools. In Mexico, the sun warms nicely. Not only will you have to take caps with you, sun protection creams and lotions, as well as water for hydration, but it will also be necessary to avoid going out during the hours of great heat. It is worth getting up a little early to admire the beaches or to swim at sunset. Sunrises and sunsets are magical.
7. Heavenly beaches
When they see this white sand and the transparent sea, the children will be overjoyed. It will be useful for you to take swimming goggles, or even snorkeling, so that children can admire the multicolored fish swimming near their little legs. It goes without saying that children should be supervised by an adult at all times when they are near the sea. Holidays are made for having a good time.
8. Delicious Mexican cuisine
There are children who are a little complicated with food, but mine love these worldly pleasures. Cancun has a huge variety of restaurants, don’t worry about what your kids are going to eat. Whatever they like, you will find it. That being said, it will be a lot of fun to have them taste Mexican specialties in a local restaurant, it’s a great way to discover the culture of a country. If you want to eat great seafood while enjoying great views, try seeing El Mocambo ; but if you don’t want to take your head, The Island offers you everything.
9. Very fun activities
Children won’t have time to get bored in Cancún. In addition to activities related to the sea and the beach, the leisure offer for families is immense. You have aquariums, like theInteractive Aquarium Cancun, theme parks, amusement parks and others. And you also have, don’t forget, a few kilometers away, some of the most extraordinary Mayan ruins in the world.
10. A safe destination
Cancún is a safe destination if you use common sense. Do not be afraid of questions relating to hygiene and/or dangers, especially if you are in the hotel zone and if you move in the time slots for children.
