What to see, what to do, where to sleep and where to eat in Holbox in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico? Here are our tips and ideas for visits to discover this island still preserved from mass tourism!

Holbox was the first step in our road trip in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. As soon as we landed in Cancun, we fled far from this Mexican Las Vegas with our rental car (which we reserved with the Carigami car rental comparator, to find ourselves on a paradise island for 2 days, quiet, far from mass tourism. There are mostly backpackers or independent travelers looking for a quiet and wild island, far from the crowds and noise of Cancun.

Here, no cars (finally very rare), but golf carts and scooters. No concrete roads but sand. No discotheques (at least I didn’t see any in the centre) but a few local restaurants with a festive or refined atmosphere!

From Cancun, it takes 2 hours by road, part of which is on the highway (with toll) and another on a country road. To reach the island of Holbox, you have to go to Chiquila and take the ferry (either the red or the blue). On site, you can leave your car in a secure and guarded parking lot, for 100 pesos per day (the one just in front of the ferry, on the left after the taxi parking lot). The crossing will cost you 140 pesos one way/person and lasts about thirty minutes. Once you arrive in Holbox, take a taxi (golf carts) to be dropped off at your hotel. Price: 30 pesos.

There are not necessarily many things to see on the island of Holbox but rather experiences to live. The island is magical, you immediately feel good there and you don’t want to leave. What I loved above all was the proximity to the locals: local life is very present and its authenticity is preserved. Here are some examples of things to do and see in Holbox.

The beaches of Holbox are heavenly! Fine white sand, turquoise waters, sandbanks, palm trees… In short, I will have to update my selection of most beautiful beaches in the world !

The best beaches in Holbox, in my opinion, are located in the west of the island. They are big and wide, there are even wooden poles on which hammocks are hung, enough to bask in the sun in a postcard setting!

Holbox is a colorful town, get lost in the alleys and admire the murals. Street-art lovers will be delighted!
We didn’t have a map or a plan, and that didn’t stop us from finding a few gems and meeting great people!

Holbox is a wild island classified as a nature reserve which is home to many animal species such as reptiles and birds (pelicans, cormorants, flamingos, birds of prey). We came across two flamingos on the east side of the island, a few pelicans and iguanas!

Know that between June and September, you can go swimming with whale sharks! Bad luck for us, we were there at the wrong time!

This is the best way to discover the island of Holbox at your own pace! We rented a bicycle for 25 pesos an hour right next to our hotel (see below for the hotel) and we left for the east of the island. Well, the bikes are no longer all young but still do the trick!
There is a nice walk to do on the seaside but do not hesitate to take the small roads, you will come across totally deserted beaches!

We didn’t do any, but you can book a trip to the city center to see Isla Pajaros, Isla Passion, observe the mangroves and snorkel in Yalahau.

Before telling you about the hotel, I would like to point out that it is a collaboration with Xperience Hotel. It is a hotel that I had found at the base alone on Booking.com and which I quickly liked. In no case did I receive instructions for writing this part of the article. Opinion, story and photographs are my own.

the Holbox Dream Beach Front by Xperience Hotel is located 5 minutes walk from the center, with direct access to the beach. It is a 4-star hotel with a rustic and bohemian style, with a Caribbean style. It is the perfect place to spend a great holiday, with your feet in the water.
It has two swimming pools, a bar-restaurant where you can have a drink, ideally to admire the sublime sunset or eat in front of a dream beach.

Our room, located on 3th floor with a view of the swimming pool and the Gulf of Mexico in the distance, had a beautiful terrace with jacuzzi and deckchair. It was spacious (two queen beds) and comfortable, with a nice bathroom opening onto the terrace.

Breakfast was included but it was served in a downtown restaurant, less than 5 minutes from the hotel. I found it very good but a little light (Kris says that was enough for him): coffee, fresh fruit juice, a plate of fresh fruit, two slices of bread and jam.

We have a golden rule: we always eat in places where there are locals, because if there are locals, it’s bound to be good! 🙂

  • Las Panchas : Yucatec specialty restaurant in an alley leading to the beach. The welcome is very warm and the atmosphere joyful! And of course the food is good!

Holbox is one of my favorites of this road trip in the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico and I strongly advise you to spend at least two days there!

So, does it make you want to go there?
