There are excursions in Playa del Carmen not to be missed. Here is a list of activities to do on the Yucatan Peninsula.
By going to Playa del Carmen it is strongly advised to visit the Mayan city of Chichen Itza, a site elected as one of the 7 wonders of the world. These ruins are the most visited attractions in Yucatan. Among the most famous, we find the “Pyramid of Kulkulan” and the “Temple of Warriors”.
They are located between the city of Merida and Cancun (plus at least 3 hours drive). In Chichen Itza there are also splendid Cenotes (wells with clear water) where it is possible to go diving.
The ruins of Tulum
Tulum is another Mayan site to visit in the Riviera Maya. Born 300 years ago, it is located on the coast, 65km from Playa del Carmen. The Tulum site is an old seaport that allowed trade between Yucatan and Honduras.
It combines fine sandy beaches with archaeological visits. On the way to Tulum, in Akumal, you can swim with turtles.
Coba is a Mayan ruin located in the state of Quintana Roo. It is found 50km from Tulum and 90km from Chitchen Itza. What makes the charm of the site is that it is placed between two lagoons. Nohoch Mul is the main pyramid of Cobá, which means “wide hill”. It measures 42 meters and is considered the highest on the peninsula.
Cozumel Island is located off the Yucatan Peninsula, a few kilometers from Playa del Carmen. It is the largest island in Mexico with a national park (“Chankanaab”) and an ecological reserve (“Punta Sur”). It is a place both pleasant for walking and for diving & snorkeling. The ferry connects Playa to Cozumel throughout the day.
Ecotourism at “Xel Ha” and “Xcaret”
Natural aquariums & wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy visiting “Xel Ha” and “Xcaret” which offer excellent conditions for snorkeling and swimming with dolphins. These eco-tourism parks allow you to see marine animals evolving in their natural environment.
Walk around and go out on Avenida Quinta
Strolling on Avenida Quinta (the street of shops & restaurants) is a must as well as the multitude of bars and nightclubs which when night falls offer you an endless number of Caribbean evenings until sunrise! There are several shops selling souvenirs, liqueurs, tattoos, etc.
What to do in Playa del Carmen is the dive at sea or in a cenote. Mexico is world famous for hosting absolutely magnificent reefs and diving spots! Here are some French-speaking dive centers in Playa del Carmen:
- Phocea Riviera Maya
- Mexico Blue Dream
- Scuba Gamma Diving
- O2 Mexico
Isla Mujeres is a small island located northeast of Cancun and accessible by ferry. It is one of ten municipalities on the Yucatan Peninsula. People who travel to Cancun usually spend a day walking around the island. The beaches are beautiful and close to the ferry.
what to do when it rains?
The weather is very changeable in Playa del Carmen. There can be blue skies and sunshine then all of a sudden rain. But don’t worry, it’s still very short. When it rains, many people go to the cinema. Cinépolis and MMCinemas are the main cinemas in Playa del Carmen. Films are shown in English with Spanish subtitles, with the exception of children’s films which are in Spanish.
There is a great shopping at Plaza las Americas or you could check it out as well.
