Austria is another of our top picks for walkers, owing to its breathtaking beauty and range of hikes available. There are some extreme and challenging trails for more seasoned hikers, but also plenty of options for those new to the sport or for people who are hiking with younger children. It’s a hobby we can all get involved with!

At times, walking through the vast Austrian mountains is quite literally like stepping into a scene from the Sound of Music (much of the film was shot in Salzburg). There are miles of green meadows, shimmering lakes and pine forests to pass by. Add wonderful Austrian culture into the mix and you’re in for a hiking holiday to remember.

Want to discover some of our favorite hiking spots in Austria? Take a look at trails through Soll, Mayrhofen, Lech, St Johann, Saalbach and Pertisau.

Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are known for so much more than just year-round dazzling sunshine (although that is a big reason why they’re so popular!). These idyllic islands are a hot spot for hikers, with stunning scenery over vast, rugged volcanic landscapes and trails to suit walkers of all levels.

The most famous place to hike is on Mount Teide, the Canaries’ largest mountain perched on Teide National Park on the fabulous island of Tenerife. It is actually an active volcano, though visitors safely hike it every day. The views are amazing, particularly from the mountain’s astronomical observatory.

Outside of Tenerife, you’ll find some incredible places to hike on the surrounding islands. Some particular spots to look out for are Garajonay National Park in La Gomera, Roque Nublo in Gran Canaria and the Volcanoes of Timanfaya in Lanzarote.

Finally, we have a totally different part of the world: Iceland. This fascinating country is sprinkled with natural wonders that will take your breath away. Tumbling waterfalls, mystical valleys, soaring geysers, bubbling hot springs and colossal glaciers will make your hikes through this magical land totally unforgettable.

You can spend days on end adventuring through the breath-taking Icelandic landscapes, or you can choose routes that are a little shorter if you want to combine your hiking with tourist excursions and some time exploring the dazzling capital city of Reykjavik. Wherever you go in Iceland, be sure to have your camera. There’s a photo opp for every few steps!

Fancy Iceland for your next hiking holiday? Some of our favorite easier routes are in the likes of Landmannalaugar, Mount Esja and Reykjadalur, or you could opt for more challenging hikes like the Laugavegur Trail or the Seven Peaks of North East Iceland.
