Weather warning for Spain holiday hotspots popular with Irish tourists including Madrid, Alicante, Mallorca


Irish holidaymakers heading to Spain in the coming days could be impacted by turbulent weather in parts.

The Spanish Meteorology Agency AEMET has issued a number of weather warnings in recent days for storms, strong winds, heavy rain, high waves and even snow.

Much of the country’s upper east coast is currently under some form of weather warning, as well as some southern coastal regions.

Some holiday hotspots popular with Irish tourist are affected including Madrid, Alicante, Mallorca, Barcelona, ​​Murcia and Girona.

In Madrid, two separate Status Yellow weather warnings for snow and wind are in place in the Sierra de Guadarrama area until midnight Wednesday. AEMET say up to 5cm of snow could fall within 24 hours while winds could like up to 100km/h.

The north coast of Alicante is under two separate Status Yellow warnings for storms and rainfall until 10pm Wednesday. AEMET’s weather alert warns up to 20mm of rain could fall in one hour, while showers may be accompanied by thunderstorms.

The south coast of Mallorca, as well as the eastern Llevant area, are under a Status Yellow coastal warning until 7am Thursday. AEMET is warning of waves of up to three meters with swell from the southwest.

Several Status Yellow weather warnings are in place for Barcelona including storm, rainfall and coastal. The storm and rainfall warnings are in place for the Barcelona coastline until noon Thursday with AEMET saying up to 20mm of rain could fall within one hour.

The coastal warning is in place for the Barcelona coastline until 6pm Wednesday, with AEMET warning of northeast wind force 7 and waves of three meters.

A number of areas in Murcia are under Status Yellow rainfall and storm warnings until 2pm Wednesday. AEMET says “the most intense rainfall and storms are expected on the coast and the coastal regions.”

Several areas in Girona are under storm and rainfall warnings until noon on Thursday. AEMET says up to 60mm of rain could fall within 12 hours in coastal areas.

Meanwhile, Ireland is set to enjoy mild temperatures and relatively settled weather this week.

Met Eireann says temperatures could reach 17C in parts on Thursday, while very little rain is forecast over the coming days.

Giving its forecast for Wednesday, it said: “Fog in the midlands will gradually clear this morning. Mostly dry and bright elsewhere other than a few mist patches. Cloudier though on western fringes, and this will gradually extend over the western half of the country , bringing patchy light rain or drizzle to west Connacht and west Munster, mostly in the afternoon.

“Highest temperatures of 12C to 16C in light to moderate south to southeast breezes.

“Mostly cloudy tonight with some patchy light rain and drizzle, predominantly along western coasts. Some clear spells too, the best of which will be in the east. Lowest temperatures of 3C to 7C, locally lower, in light to moderate southeasterly or variable winds .”
